2027 FORD EXPLORER TOWING GUIDE
2027 Ford Explorer Towing Capacity and Trailer Setup
The 2027 Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,000 pounds with its standard Class III Trailer Tow Package. The next question is whether your fully loaded trailer fits the Explorer's other limits, including tongue weight and wind-facing size. We'll walk you through what the equipment provides, what to check before connecting a trailer, and how to choose the right Explorer for the job.

What Are You Planning to Tow With Your Explorer?
The same tow rating can mean different things for different trailers. Choose the type closest to yours to see which details to check before you buy or hitch up.
SELECT A TRAILER TYPE
BOAT / PERSONAL WATERCRAFT
Weigh the boat as it actually travels
A boat's published dry weight leaves out the trailer, outboard, fuel, batteries, coolers and other gear. Compare the loaded combination with the Explorer's rating, then measure the weight pressing down on the hitch.
Worth checking: At a wet launch ramp, four-wheel-drive traction can be helpful, but it does not increase the towing limit.
UTILITY / EQUIPMENT
Placement matters as much as the load
A lawn tractor, building materials or compact equipment can concentrate weight toward one end of a trailer. Secure the cargo and verify tongue load after arranging it. A light trailer with poorly positioned cargo can still overload a hitch or axle.
Worth checking: Count tools, passengers and luggage inside the Explorer when evaluating the vehicle's available carrying capacity.
CAMPER / ENCLOSED
Check the height and width facing the wind
A tall travel trailer has more aerodynamic drag than an open trailer of similar weight. Ford specifies a 40-square-foot trailer frontal-area limit. Check the trailer's actual front profile and loaded weight rather than relying on its empty brochure weight.
Worth checking: Confirm the trailer's braking arrangement and whether an aftermarket electronic brake controller is required.
These examples guide the first checks; they do not establish that a particular trailer is within the vehicle's ratings.
FROM FACTORY EQUIPMENT TO A READY TRAILER
How to Set Up the 2027 Ford Explorer for Towing
Ford equips the 2027 Explorer with a standard Class III Trailer Tow Package. It includes a hitch receiver, seven-wire harness with 4-/7-pin connectors, Tow/Haul mode and Trailer Sway Control. That's the vehicle-side starting point, not a complete connection for every trailer.
Get the loaded trailer weight, not just its advertised dry weight
Include cargo, equipment, fluids and everything attached to the trailer. Compare that measured or reliably established loaded weight with the Explorer's trailer limit. Also check the vehicle's GVWR, axle ratings and gross combined weight rating (GCWR) with its passengers and cargo aboard.
Fit the correct ball mount, coupler and electrical connection
The standard receiver does not include a hitch ball or ball mount. Match the ball diameter, mount rating and trailer coupler; keep the trailer level according to its requirements. Connect the electrical plug, safety chains and breakaway system where fitted, then test every trailer light.
Confirm trailer brakes before using Tow/Haul mode
If your trailer uses electric brakes, Ford requires a compatible aftermarket electronic trailer brake controller; a 7-pin socket alone does not operate those brakes. Check local trailer-brake rules, verify brake operation and select Tow/Haul mode for appropriate transmission behavior on the trip.
Check tongue weight and make a final walk-around
Measure tongue weight with the trailer loaded for departure, keep it within the 500-pound receiver limit and the Explorer's remaining payload and axle capacities, and secure the cargo. Inspect tires, hitch latch, chains, lights and brakes. Allow extra stopping distance and recheck the connection after the first stretch of travel.

MANUFACTURER-REPORTED RATINGS
2027 Ford Explorer Towing Capacity by Engine and Drivetrain
Both the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder and 3.0L EcoBoost V6 have the same 5,000-pound maximum loaded-trailer rating in Ford's towing guide. The V6 brings more power, not a higher trailer-weight ceiling. The gross combined weight rating differs by drivetrain and equipment, so open the table to check the published configurations.

QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU HITCH UP
2027 Ford Explorer Towing Capacity and Trailer Setup FAQs
How much can the 2027 Ford Explorer tow?
The 2027 Ford Explorer has a maximum loaded-trailer rating of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Actual towing capability depends on the specific vehicle, passengers, cargo, options and applicable weight ratings.
Is the 2027 Ford Explorer Trailer Tow Package standard?
Yes. Ford lists the Class III Trailer Tow Package as standard equipment. It includes the factory receiver and 4-/7-pin trailer wiring, plus Tow/Haul mode and Trailer Sway Control.
What is the maximum tongue weight for a 2027 Ford Explorer?
Ford lists a 500-pound maximum tongue load for the factory hitch receiver. Measure tongue weight with the trailer loaded for travel, and account for it when checking the Explorer’s vehicle and axle weight ratings.
Can the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 Explorer tow more than the 2.3L?
No. Ford lists up to 5,000 pounds of maximum loaded-trailer weight for both engines. The V6 offers additional power, but it does not increase the published trailer-weight ceiling.
Does the 2027 Explorer have a trailer brake controller?
Ford requires a compatible aftermarket electronic trailer brake controller when towing a trailer equipped with electric brakes. The factory 7-pin connector is not itself a brake controller. Check state trailer-brake requirements as well.
What does the 40-square-foot trailer frontal-area limit mean?
Ford specifies a 40-square-foot maximum trailer frontal area for the Explorer with the Trailer Tow Package. A large, boxy trailer can create substantial wind resistance even when its loaded weight falls below 5,000 pounds.
Do four-wheel drive and Tow/Haul mode raise the Explorer towing limit?
No. Four-wheel drive can help with traction, and Tow/Haul changes the driving response for towing. Neither raises the published 5,000-pound trailer ceiling or 500-pound tongue-load limit.
Where can I check an Explorer towing configuration in Savannah?
Contact J.C. Lewis Ford Savannah at 9505 Abercorn Street. Bring your trailer’s loaded weight, tongue load, size and braking setup; we can help you review the Explorer configuration and current vehicle choices.

*Maximum towing figures refer to the U.S.-market 2027 Ford Explorer with required equipment and Ford’s stated loading assumptions (150-lb driver and passenger). Ratings change with cargo, passengers, options, accessories, drivetrain and vehicle configuration. Never exceed the actual vehicle’s maximum loaded trailer rating, GVWR, axle ratings, GCWR, tire capacities or hitch tongue-load rating.
*The factory Class III hitch receiver does not include the hitch ball or ball mount. For trailers equipped with electric brakes, Ford requires a compatible aftermarket electronic trailer brake controller. Verify trailer-brake regulations where you will tow. Confirm electrical compatibility, lights, chains, trailer and tire condition, and operating instructions before every trip.
*Trailer frontal-area limits, loading, braking distance and handling remain important even below the rated maximum. Use the vehicle owner’s manual, the Ford towing guide and the actual vehicle and trailer labels. Inventory and equipment may change; ask us to confirm the configuration before visiting.
